Paul Ryan is No Deficit Hawk

Ezra Klein says there is a “misconception” about Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) policy goals: “He is not primarily interested in reducing the deficit or cutting federal spending. He has voted to increase deficits and expand government spending too many times for that to be the case. Rather, the common thread throughout his career is his desire to remake the basic architecture of the the federal government.”

“Take Ryan’s budget. It’s most famous for cutting entitlement programs, particularly Medicare. But that’s not primarily what it does… The truth is that the Ryan budget’s largest long-term savings don’t come from Medicaid or Medicare or Social Security, or even Medicaid and Medicare and Social Security put together. They come from everything else… Ryan is also known as having a deep allergy to debt. But such a concern isn’t evident in his voting record…”

“But the real north star of Ryan’s policy record isn’t deficits or spending, though he often uses those concerns in service of his agenda. It’s radically reforming the way the federal government provides public services, usually by privatizing or devolving those public services away from the federal government.”

Jonathan Chait points out that Ryan “spent the entire Bush administration either supporting the administration’s deficit-increasing policies, or proposing alternative policies that would have created much higher deficits than even Bush could stomach, but came away from it with a reputation as the ultimate champion of fiscal responsibility.”

Similarly, Paul Krugman says that “anyone who believes in Ryan’s carefully cultivated image as a brave, honest policy wonk has been snookered… he is, in fact, a big fraud, who doesn’t care at all about fiscal responsibility, and whose policy proposals are sloppy as well as dishonest. Of course, this means that he’ll fit in to the Romney campaign just fine.”

Well, it’s actually funny that Krugman, who is an advocate of runaway government spending “to boost economy”, is the one criticizing.

So what do you think about the point he makes, namely that Ryan sure doesn’t seem to actually care about fiscal responsibility when a Republican’s in charge? Or is that point retroactively nullified, made moot and un-true, thrown into the memory hole, because it was made by Paul Krugman?

      • L. Jones

He’s your typical conservative Republican. Slash social spending, cut taxes for the rich, dramatically increase defense spending. If the budget isn’t balanced…oh well.

    • L. Jones

      Jobs now…..deficit later.

    • Cjrautmann

Depends on the purpose of raising the debt.
If during an economic downturn with sagging demand, Krugman is all about government deficit spending in order to get people employed, and to build infrastructure projects in the short term.
Ryan is all about government deficit in order to create such an outcry that everyday people will scream to dismantle their own government, the “shrink it until we can drown it in the bathtub” Grover Norquist Republicans.
      What’s the difference?
One is constructive, living off debt in a time of trouble.  The other is nihilistic, intentionally destroying something simply to destroy it.

On a certain level, knowing that Paul Ryan is a “son” of the Koch Brothers, I find this a bit disconcerting:
“Rather, the common thread throughout his [Paul Ryan's] career is his desire to remake the basic architecture of the the federal government.”

The basic economic architecture of our federal government is a democracy for the people that taxes Capitalism to fund the national Debt, Defense, and Welfare of the people.

I don’t think that’s the federal government the Koch Brothers want to keep.

  • Think Outside the Box

Paul Ryan apparently is just another hypocrite who has mastered the art of tip-toe dancing around the truth to look good and gain power for all the wrong reasons.  Beware the words of Jesus Christ who commanded us to love our neighbors as much as we love ourselves.

So, who takes this opinion piece seriously?  I mean really, if you’re that gullible you deserve obama.

  • uknowme

    Yes another Fiscal Phonie

  • scvblwxq

It looks like Ryan voted for $7 trillion in deficit spending under Bush and more before Bush.
