Is Obama Already Shelving Climate Change?

As quickly as President Obama raised the issue of climate change in his election victory speech, the Los Angeles Times reports that he indicated at his first post-election press conference that “reducing carbon emissions comes nowhere near the top of his agenda.”

“On Tuesday, Obama talked only in the broadest terms about initiating a ‘conversation’ with scientists, engineers and elected officials to try to find areas for progress. He said he would look for ‘bipartisan support’ to try to move the issue forward. It’s hard to imagine where that support would come from, since many Republicans in Congress refuse to even acknowledge that global temperature increases can be tied to human activity.”

The New York Times reports that Obama was much more forthcoming on solving immigration.

One disappointment after another with this guy. Where is his spine?

I know how you feel with Climate Change. The question is, other than executive actions, there isn’t much that he can do with Republicans controlling the House. With immigration, that’s different because the Republican Establishment is afraid of losing the hispanic vote. On the other hand, the Grand Oil Plutocrats would never play ball on Climate Change.
there is good news though. Obama has been able to enforce mileage standards, invest significantly in clean energy, and regulate coal. Is that going to be enough? Well, on it’s own it wouldn’t be, but with a shift to natural gas (which isn’t perfect, but it still emits less than coal) we’re on track to have the lowest levels of carbon emissions in 20 years. I’ve also read that if the regulations on the coal industry and the shift to natural gas continue, by 2015 we’ll have the lowest carbon emissions since 1980!
The problem is that by “we” I mean the U.S. China and India are doing what they can, (in fact their governments have done far more on the policy level than we have) but emissions are still rising in these countries, and as a result, emissions are rising globally. Who knows. Maybe biofuels will save the planet. I’ve read that cars that run on biofuels have negative emissions. We might be able to come up with some sort technology that’ll save the planet. One can only hope.
