111912 10 Chart of the Day

– Chart showing a recent spike in uncertainty among small businesses surveyed by the National Federation of Independent Businesses, via John Mauldin.

“It seems that all politicians can do is talk about the need to create jobs, yet the reality is that government doesn’t create jobs. It can create the conditions in which jobs are created, but it is up to the individual businessman (or, increasingly, businesswoman) to make a decision to hire additional workers… Let’s hope that our political leaders can give us a little more certainty and that it will not be the certainty of a recession.”

What tripe! If government doesn’t create jobs, then why would the sequester cause a recession? More obviously, who’s employing the armed forces, the police, the teachers, the judiciary, the prison guards, etc. etc. etc.? Who’s paying private businesses to build roads and bridges and aircraft carriers? And when government pays these people and businesses, what comes that income? Isn’t it spent by them on goods and services, which pay for the jobs of those who provide them?
Businesses will hire workers when there is sufficient demand for the business’s product or service. Almost a century of basic macroeconomics is uncontroverted in its conclusion that government spending creates jobs when demand is insufficient to employ the productive capacities of the nation. Let’s not enable the Luddites who would have the nation battle a recession with both hands tied behind our backs. As Keynes said, the boom, not the bust, is the time for austerity.
