The National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine released a new report looking at why the US “spends more on health care than any other nation” but “are in poorer health and live shorter lives than people in many other high-income countries.”
“The report finds that America’s health disadvantage probably results from a combination of factors: inadequate health care systems, unhealthy behaviors, social and economic factors, and environmental factors, such as metropolitan landscapes that encourage car use rather than exercise.”
Dan Kadlec finds a piece of good news in the paper: “retirees in the U.S. can expect to live longer than those in other advanced economies.”
“American seniors benefit from lower cancer death rates and greater control of blood pressure and cholesterol levels… Seniors also enjoy one of the world’s most technologically advanced health care systems… Americans start outliving people in peer countries after the age of 75.”
