Obamacare Won't Cure America's Poor Health

Robert Samuelson digs deeper into the recent report on the American health care system.

“The report’s most important contribution is to show that much of the U.S. ‘health disadvantage’ doesn’t reflect an inadequate health-care system but lifestyle choices, personal behaviors and social pathologies… Those who expect the introduction of the main elements of the Affordable Care Act (‘Obamacare’) in 2014 to improve Americans’ health dramatically are likely to be disappointed.”

“The lack of insurance is a problem, but it is not the main health problem, in part because the uninsured already receive much uncompensated care.”

  • Chris Rautmann

Earlier and better access to preventive care may help a great deal in driving future costs down. Cholesterol medication is much cheaper than dealing with a heart attack and subsequent long term care for someone with a compromised heart.

But those cost advantaeges will take time for them to become apparent.

Exactly. Seeing a doctor has informative value as well that many people never get to take advantage of.

Spot on, in many cases a early treatment is both more efficent and less expensive,But that will not show in a while because first tehre will eb both teh cost for thsoe early treatmnets and for the (to) late treatmnet fo those who didn’t get it in earlier years.
