Obama Close to Naming New Commerce Secretary
Posted at 3:15 p.m. on Jan. 31
Michael Sneed reports that President Obama is considering nominating Hyatt hotel heiress Penny Pritzker as his next Commerce Secretary, a position that has had an acting director since June 2012.
“The powerful Pritzker, who served as the national finance chair for Obama’s first presidential campaign, withdrew her name from consideration for the position just a few weeks after Obama won in 2008.”
Al Kamen hears that Pritzker is the pick and has the back story on her previous removal from consideration.
Pritzker “withdrew her name apparently because of toxic subprime loans involving a failed bank partially owned by her family. There were also concerns that her $1.8 billion net worth included offshore accounts.”
