Obamacare Fixed the Health Care Market

Paul Krugman explains why it is no surprise that President Obama’s health care reform law is pushing down health insurance premiums.

“Until now there has been sort of a market — but one that…is riddled with problems. It was very hard for individuals to figure out what they were buying… Price and quality comparisons were near-impossible. Under these conditions the magic of the marketplace couldn’t work — there really wasn’t a proper market.”

“With the ACA, however, insurers operate under clear ground rules, with clearly defined grades of plan and discrimination banned. The result, suddenly, is that we have real market competition.”

This is apparent where ever you look at actual pricing under implementation, but many are still relying on questionable, agenda-driven projections to discuss costs. When will that stop? When will reality be our guide to what is good policy?

Once Oct 1 hits, and then definitely after Jan. 1, 2014 hits, this shifts from politics to constituent services and electeds will all suddenly have thousands of citizens who benefit from health reform. At that point, the dialogue around opposing Obamacare drastically shifts to a question of which elected officials want to take away the health care of 1000s upon 1000s of people. Politically speaking, health reform then reclaims the third rail status it faced for decades and Obama’s primary legislative achievement is solid as a rock. Yes, that rock will need polishing, but it ain’t going anywhere once people start buying plans on the exchange.
