Obama Looks to Expand Obamacare Subsidies

The Huffington Post reports that the “Obama administration is considering a fix to the president’s health care law that would expand the universe of individuals who receive tax subsidies to help buy insurance.”

“Under the ACA, there are tax subsidies to help individuals and families with income between 133 percent and 400 percent above the poverty level purchase insurance. Those with incomes higher than 400 percent above poverty get no such assistance. The proposed administrative fix would address this group.”

Expanding subsidies for those above 400% is potentially fine, but a MUCH bigger priority should be offering subsidies for those 133% in the states that have rejected Medicaid expansion. They’re the folks who need it most.

And in the states that did expand medicaid, in 3 years i will LOVE to see the deficit in their budgets when the federal funding decreases. I wonder where the hundreds of millions of dollars will come from to close the gap.
Of course, those govs who decides to expand will be long gone and wont have to worry about it.

Those states will have to pick up 10% of the cost.

That is more than offset by the current (and rapidly increasing) costs the states incur dealing with uninsured people – costs that all taxpayers currently have to underwrite.

I’m sure the GOP will have no problems whatsoever with expanding the scope of the ACA. No problems whatsoever. /end snark

Eh, they might be able to sell this to the tea baggers if they only extend coverage for white male landowners.

Doesn’t matter. An administrative fix is done through a new reg, not through legislation.

      • lilvinnyb

Expanding subsidies = extra cost. Funding must come through legislation. Or are you one of the “low information” voters who think that subsidies come free?

        • retired21

I’m talking about the fix to allow people to keep their junk policies. I’m not talking about any subsidies. Wake up.

  • lilvinnyb

In other words, Obama care is getting MORE expensive.

  • lilvinnyb

I love how they just say “expand subsidies” as though there is no cost to it. People are ALREADY paying higher permiums to expand subsidies, how high are they suppose to go.
