The Economist: “In the past 50 years cigarette consumption per adult has fallen by 72%”

    But what I find amazing is that it’s around 1000 cigarettes per person. 20% of adults smoke, so for a smoker, they use 5000 cigarettes per year, or about 14 per day. Maybe to a smoker this seems normal, but I don’t do anything 14 times per day every day.

      when I was a teenager there was something I did 14 times a day but am too polite to mention it here.

    From the second chart, it looks as if cigarette smoking was only really widespread from the ’40s to the ’80s — a relatively short period of time in the scheme of things.
