Huntsman Calls on GOP to Face Facts About Climate Change

Jon Huntsman, writing in the New York Times, calls on fellow Republicans to take action on climate change.

Citing a recent Pew survey showing a drop (from 59% in 2009 to 50% in 2013) among Republicans who believe that there is solid evidence of rising temperatures on earth, Huntsman expresses concern with the “shift among Republicans on climate change.”

“What’s been lost is any Republican creative thinking on the issue.”

“So obtuse has become the party’s dialogue on climate change that it’s now been reduced to believing or not believing, as if it were a religious mantra.”

“This approach reached a new low last month during a North Carolina congressional debate at which all the Republican candidates chuckled at a question on climate change — as if they had been asked about their belief in the Tooth Fairy.”

“We need to plan for the impacts of climate change at all levels of government. We need to empower Republicans leading those efforts to make decisions and investments that benefit their constituents, the party and the planet. Denying the science will only hinder their chance for success.”

    CLIMATE CHANE = WEATHER and
    is just that:
climate changes as it has since earth was formed.

Anyone older than 50 will remember that every 15-20 years
the liberal media / democrat politicians (Time, Newsweek, NYT….) like to
MANUFACTURE CRISES to stir up fear for a cause (global cooling in the 60′s, global warming in the 90′s, etc.). The 20 years cycles correspond with changes in the sun.

Supports of climate change (some mystical earth change)
aka “Global Warming” (the term wasn’t working for them)
    are just
    political power hungry liberals
    seeing it as an
issue to run on to distract
    from the
    ROTTEN OBAMA-DEMOCRAT-SOCIALIST ECONOMY.

    Scientists
    who support the cause
    are just
    money / grant hungry
    folks looking for work.

    There is
no science (also science should not be based on concensus–it should be inherit in findings-date)
    to support Global Warming as
    major issue to worry about
(it is last on Americans list of worries per polls)…
    there are only
    computer models
    based on
    flawed and biased data-old rusting
    monitors
    posing as
    “science”.

      First Weather is not Climate
Weather= Today it’s sunny, tommorrow it will rain
Climate = changes that are persistent over long periods of times as in decades or centuries.
On the shortest timescales it could be :last decade we got 30 inches of rain on average per year, next decade we may get only 20 on average per year sending us into deep drought

It’s not the sun the sun has been slightly decreasing the energy it gives us for most of the last decade, yet we kept right on warming. and the solar cycle is usually 11 years not 20(though our current cycles switch from minimum to maximum is a couple years overdo now).

The couple magazine articles in the 60′s and 70′s were based on almost no data, they were mostly magazines looking for a catchy headline, and based on the fact that a gradual cooling over a few centuries could bring back the ice age.

Now we have actual data, actual measurements, not models on how the earth is changing, and what greenhouse gas levels were in the past.
It all shows that greenhouse gas levels have risen far higher than at any time in millions of years, and the global average temperature has been rising, and rising at a even faster rate than previous predictions had anticipated.

check out the ice loss at the arctic, the actual measurements of global average temperature, the ice core data, sea level data.
It’s all there if your interested in looking at what is actually happening to the world instead of spreading political propaganda

No actual warming in almost 20 years. You forget that your hockey stick was debunked quite awhile back. Satellite is the only reliable source of temperature data and has only been available since 1978. The latest Holdren-fraudulent utterance, climate disruption, is just an attempt to make it appear as if the severe winter just past is climate related. The same Holdren, by the way, who’s long advocated the elimination of billions from the human population by the most expedient means necessary.

“No actual warming in almost 20 years”

          Easily refuted lie
          http://climate.nasa.gov/key_indicators#globalTemp

The hockey stick is talking point almost irrelevant to the discussion of actual change.
North America had a tough winter, but nothing that would have been out of the ordinary a mere 30 years ago, meanwhile Alaska had 60 degree temperatures in January, and Europe, Russia,Siberia, China, Greenland, the arctic ocean, were all above average most of the winter.

you follow it up with propoganda intended to conflate the advocacy of greater use of birth control and family planning with murder

Interesting data, the map shows the smallest amount of warming,( and in some cases cooling) in the deep south. I wonder if some of the resistance then, could from a difference in actual experience compared to the rest of the country and much of the world.
Still. eventually a changing globe will affect us all, and southern LA, MS, and AL will not be immune from sea level rise.

Do we assume that this is the assertion of the failed politician Huntsman, and not his far more virtuous and sensible father? Perhaps he can explain the tremendous drop in real estate prices across the coastal US that is now taking place? Or the even more precipitous drop in land prices in Manhattan? Perhaps the moguls can finagle an Obama taxpayer bailout? Or perhaps it isn’t happening at all! I’m pretty confidant that the smart money knows this con job for what it is and isn’t about to fall for it–so why should we?Al Gore and friends have mansions aplenty, boats and jet aircraft, entirely unconcerned with their “carbon footprint”.
Under these circumstances, don’t you feel less than ethical in continuing to propagandize this massive hoax in your fine column?

the real estate prices might not be dropping yet, but the insurance costs sure are rising.

The climate changes every second of every day man has never and will never control the weather any polition that beleaves in this crap should be removed from office and put in a mental institute

    • moderatesunite

As stated below weather does not = climate.
weather=it’s sunny in the morning, in the afternoon it will rain
climate= changes that are persistent for decades, centuries or longer.

humans have become a force of nature that can terraform vast stretches of the planet into farms, cities etc. Our actions have consequences, and we need to learn to use our power wisely.
Personal responsibility,it’s something conservatives are supposed to value. If you believe that god gave us the planet to take stewardship of then we have the responsibility to manage it well.

I believe demoscum can control the climate with higher taxes and the destruction of capitalism. Dems/liberals/socialists/marxist are the universe’s greatest thieves!

The Republicans have done themselves a huge disservice by not passing the unemployment extension bill in the senate. With more than 2.6 million unemployed families who had lost their benefits late last December, and have been struggling to provide shelter and food for their children, it was one of the cruelest and heartless moves for them to make. They have been at war with the poor and disadvantaged in our country, and have made it known where and to whom their allegiance lies. The republicans have been using the extension bill “hostage” for the past six months, in order to have the Koch brother’s oil pipeline deal passed in the senate. This is whom they truly represent. The republicans have shown that the average American citizen, takes a back seat to special interest groups, and wealthy lobbyist. The party which claims to represent family values, has let these millions of families left hung out to dry. These families have had to face evictions, home foreclosures, personal bankruptcy

  • YONATAN C

ITS NOT A SURPRISED THAT PEOPLE ARE BEGINING TO VOICE THEIR ANGER AT THE REPUBLICAN SENATE, AND AT SENATOR JOHN BOEHNER IN PARTICULAR, FOR THEIR TOTAL FAILURE TO DO THE “RIGHT & MORAL” THING, AND PASS THE UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION BILL FOR THESE 2.6 MILLION UNEMPLOYED FAMILIES WITHOUT BENEFITS. SINCE LATE LAST DECEMBER, THE REPUBLICANS HAVE BEEN HOLDING THE EXTENSION BILL “HOSTAGE” IN THE SENATE FOR POLITICAL LEVERAGE. THEY HAVE MADE DELAY AFTER DELAY, DRAGGING THEIR FEET, WHILE FAMILLIES WERE BEING DESTROYED FINANCIALLY, MANY BECOMING HOMELESS IN THE PROCESS. THE REPUBLICANS HAVE USED THESE FAMILIES AS BARGAINING CHIPS, IN ORDER TO GET THE KOCH BROTHER’S OIL PIPE LINE APPROVED IN RETURN. THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT THE AVERAGE AMERICAN WORKER, THEY GIVE THEIR LOYALITY TO THE UPPER ONE PERCENT IN THE COUNTRY, NOT TO THE 99 PERCENT WHO DO MOST OF THE WORKING AND TAX PAYING. I’M SURPTEISED THAT PEOPLE HAVEN’T STARTED PROTESTING IN THE STREET ABOUT THIS. I KNOW THAT THE REPUBLICANS HAVE WASTED ONY CHANCE OF WINNING THE NEXT ELECTIONS BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE.
