Conservatives Look for Ways Not to Save the Planet

Jonathan Chait: “When the Obama administration launched its health-care reform project five years ago, conservatives were held back by the sheer lack of interest in the issue they had accumulated over the decades. Conservative intellectuals had paid hardly any detailed attention to the specific problems of health-care economics and found themselves grasping for generalized right-wing bromides. (They have played vigorous catch-up in the years since.)”

“The same rough dynamic can be seen now as Obama launches a major climate change initiative. Conservatives are grasping for ideological truisms to fill a void of any detailed policy-level engagement. A case in point is the conservative belief that carbon reduction is pointless because China will never go along.”

“The striking thing about this reasoning is not so much that the conclusion is certainly wrong, but that it does not even recognize the counters of the debate. It’s true that the U.S. accounts for only around 15 percent of global carbon emissions, and Obama’s proposed reductions would have a modest impact on rising temperatures. But nobody thinks limiting U.S. greenhouse-gas emissions will solve climate change in and of itself. The entire purpose of doing so is to enable an international treaty.”

By moving ever-further Rightward, conservatives (i.e., Republicans) have lost touch with most realities, period — while their echo chamber shields them from ever having to admit it. As a result, the world has moved miles since they last bothered to look up — and now they are caught wanting.

Gee, I can’t think of a more deserving bunch. They have no ideas or policies.

The Republicans & Democrats, have both Failed, the More Than 2.6 Million Unemployed Families, still Without an Extension Of Unemployment Benefits, since Late Last December. For the past Five And A Half Months, these families have had to face Evictions, Home foreclosures, Bankruptcy, and Homelessness, while these two political parties played “Party Politics” in the senate, Delaying and Postponing the vote. The Republicans in particular, have held the Extension Bill “Hostage” in the senate, never truly planning on passing the bill. When Billions of Tax Payer Dollars have been Approved for the Ukraine, and More spent on Military aid for Europe, the poor & Unemployed in this country are left alone to struggle and suffer economically. We have Representatives that are No Longer Representing the interests of the average American, but are answering to Corporate America and Special Interest Groups instead. These career politicians need be voted out of office in the coming election

THEY MIGHT WANT TO START WITH THEIR JOBS FIRST.WE SEND OUR TROOPS TO IRAQ, BUT DON’T TREAT OUR VETERANS WELL WHEN THEY RETURN. WE SEND BILLIONS OF FOREIGN AID TO THE UKRAINE, AND OTHER COUNTRIES, BUT THE SENATE WON’T PASS THE UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION BILL FOR THE THREE MILLION OF UNEMPLOYED FAMILIES WITHOUT BENEFITS SINCE LATE LAST DECEMBER. THESE FAMILIES HAVE FALLEN INTO FINANCIAL RUIN, MANY ARE WITHOUT HOMES. THE REPUBLICANS HAVE INTENTIONALLY DELAYED AND POSTPONED THE VOTE UNTIL THE BILL WOULD BECOME DIFFICULT TO PASS. THESE ARE OUR SO CALLED “PUBLIC SERVANTS” IN ACTION THESE DAYS. THEY ALL NEED TO BE VOTED OUT OF OFFICE FOR FAILING TO SERVE THE PEOPLE.
