Texas GOP Pushes ‘Reparative’ Therapy for Gays

Andrew Rosenthal comments on the Texas Republican Party’s draft platform for the 2014 election.

“It’s poised to endorse the ‘reparative therapy’ that some ill-informed or malicious people consider a ‘cure’ for being gay.”

“The platform draft declares that ‘homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable alternative lifestyle, in public policy, nor should family be redefined to include homosexual couples.’”

The platform draft continues:

“We believe there should be no granting of special legal entitlements or creation of special status for homosexual behavior, regardless of state of origin. Additionally, we oppose any criminal or civil penalties against those who oppose homosexuality out of faith, conviction, or belief in traditional values. We recognize the legitimacy and value of counseling which offers reparative therapy and treatment to patients who are seeking escape from the homosexual lifestyle, No laws or executive orders shall be imposed to limit or restrict access to this type of therapy.”

My conservative lesbian cousin that lives in Austin, TX is going to love this.

    What a small-dicked proposal!

I am the delegate who WROTE this “Reparative Therapy plank” for the Texas GOP Platform. This amendment protects the right of self-motivated individuals to pursue Reparative Therapy and other SOCE (Sexual Orientation Change Efforts).

I personally benefited greatly from it as has everyone I’ve met who has ever tried it. Reparative Therapy does not claim to be “cure.”

Reparative Therapy is based on the premise that reducing shame, building self-esteem, and self acceptance and healing the underlying emotional wounds that drive homosexual behavior will make such behavior less compelling. Thereby, it enables us to live much more fulfilling lives in accordance with our own beliefs.

The reason this platform plank is so important is because “gay” activists have been attacking this life-saving therapy across the country and attempting to ban it, especially for those who can benefit MOST from it – teenagers.

I benefited from Reparative Therapy as a 14 year old and although I didn’t pursue that course in high school, I came back to reparative therapy after living a “gay” identity for over 12 years. I am so grateful that Reparative Therapy exists and hope to help as many

others benefit from it as I can.

Sorry to say Jeremy but quackery and superstition are not a healthy way to address self-loathing. Your ‘therapy’ plank has no place as policy in any party that doesn’t wish to be recognized as mean, ignorant and delusional.

The pseudo psychology behind nonsense such as ‘reparative therapy’ is about as convincing as the pseudo-science the GOP uses to deny climate change or the pseudo-patriotism behind this weeks media lynching of Bowe Bergdahl. You have every right to make whatever decisions you choose about your own sexuality but you have no right whatsoever to visit bigotry and discrimination on gay Americans who are comfortable with who they are simply because, unfortunately, you are not.

“I am the delegate who WROTE this “Reparative Therapy plank” for the Texas GOP Platform.”

      You must be so proud.

So, what’s your poison of choice? Do you encourage them to play sports? Hug other men? Little electroshock therapy, maybe? Hang around with horses? Or maybe you just tell them to hit pillows with baseball bats? Oh, the myriad of treatments available to the totally-legitimate quackery that is pray-the-gay-away.

“Reparative Therapy is based on the premise that reducing shame,”

Reducing the shame you institutionalize? That shame?

      “…life-saving therapy…”

Life saving? Perhaps you could document some cases of pray-the-gay away literally saving lives.

” I am so grateful that Reparative Therapy exists and hope to help as many others benefit from it as I can.”

Like it helped John Paulk and Michael Bussee? Or maybe like it helped Christopher Austin? Is he still doing time, by the way?

Let’s see if you actually have the courage to respond, of if you’re just a spammer peddling this crap to your next unsuspecting victims.

I believe so-called “reparative” therapy is still legal for adults in all states.

It has been banned for children because it is nothing more than parental/communal emotional abuse in the majority of cases, given the coercive power adults have over legal children.

I support you in your efforts to mitigate some of the feelings of shame and ostracism that you have experienced as a result of growing up in a family and part of a community that places conformity to heterosexual sex above self-determination in following one’s heart.

That kind of conformity has existed, and still exists, in many cultures throughout the world where arranged marriage is still practiced, for instance.

Best wishes in pursuing your community’s wishes and desires for you.

THE SENATE NEEDS “REPARATIVE THERAPY” BY HANDING THEM ALL THEIR WALKING PAPERS. THEY HAVE SHOWN THEMSELVES UNCAPABLE AND WORTHLESS.The Republicans & Democrats, have both Failed, the More Than 2.6 Million Unemployed Families, still Without an Extension Of Unemployment Benefits, since Late Last December. For the past Five And A Half Months, these families have had to face Evictions, Home foreclosures, Bankruptcy, and Homelessness, while these two political parties played “Party Politics” in the senate, Delaying and Postponing the vote. The Republicans in particular, have held the Extension Bill “Hostage” in the senate, never truly planning on passing the bill. When Billions of Tax Payer Dollars have been Approved for the Ukraine, and More spent on Military aid for Europe, the poor & Unemployed in this country are left alone to struggle and suffer economically. We have Representatives that are No Longer Representing the interests of the average American, but are answering to Corporate America and Special Interest Groups instead. These career politicians need be voted out of office in the coming election.

Well it is all we have until a prenatal test is available and we can abort them.
No parent wants a homosexual kid.

THERES’ THREE MILLION UNEMPLOYED FAMILIES WHO HAVE BEEN WITHOUT AN UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION SINCE LATE LAST DECEMBER. THESE FAMILIES ARE TRULY BROKE, AND BECOMING FINANCIALLY RUINED WITH EACH PASSING DAY. BOTH THE REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS HAVE UTTERLY FAILED THESE FAMLIES, AND HAVE TURNED THEIR BACKS ON THEM ALREADY, AND JUST WALKED AWAY FROM THE ISSUE. MEANWHILE MORE AND MORE ARE FACING EVICTIONS, HOME FORECLOSURES, BANKRUPTCY, AND HOMELESSNESS, WHILE WAITING FOR THE HELP WHICH DOESN’T COME. HELP AND ASSISTACNE HAS COME FOR THE UKRAINE HOWEVER. CONGRESS PASSED A FOREIGN AID BILL WORTH BILLIONS OF TAX PAYER DOLLARS FOR THAT COUNTRY. I GUESS IT’S ONLY THE POOR AND STRUGGLING HERE THAT THEY REFUSE TO HELP
