When Charities Subsidize the Rich

Dean Baker of Aljazeera America writes that “we usually think of charities as institutions that direct money from those on top to those who are most in need. But in our vibrant 21st century economy, charities often funnel money in the opposite direction, with the rest of us subsidizing the incomes of the very rich.”

“A study by the Institute for Policy Studies found that student debt and low-paid faculty increased more rapidly at the universities with the 25 highest-paid presidents than the national average. At the very least, this suggests high presidential pay is not associated with scoring well in terms of relieving the burdens of those most in need in higher education — student debtors and adjuncts.”

“The pay for these millionaires comes directly out of the pockets of the rest of us in the same way as the food stamps or disability payments that get conservatives so excited.”

And “there are many charities and foundations that rely almost entirely on such contributions or the income from endowments that were created from them. In these cases it would be reasonable to assume that roughly 40 percent of the pay for the presidents and other top executives came from taxpayers.”

WE SEND OUR TROOPS TO IRAQ, BUT DON’T TREAT OUR VETERANS WELL WHEN THEY RETURN. WE SEND BILLIONS OF FOREIGN AID TO THE UKRAINE, AND OTHER COUNTRIES, BUT THE SENATE WON’T PASS THE UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION BILL FOR THE THREE MILLION OF UNEMPLOYED FAMILIES WITHOUT BENEFITS SINCE LATE LAST DECEMBER. THESE FAMILIES HAVE FALLEN INTO FINANCIAL RUIN, MANY ARE WITHOUT HOMES. THE REPUBLICANS HAVE INTENTIONALLY DELAYED AND POSTPONED THE VOTE UNTIL THE BILL WOULD BECOME DIFFICULT TO PASS. THESE ARE OUR SO CALLED “PUBLIC SERVANTS” IN ACTION THESE DAYS. THEY ALL NEED TO BE VOTED OUT OF OFFICE FOR FAILING TO SERVE THE PEOPLE.

I’m so enriched to finally hear what AlJazeera has to say about something.
As far as the cited ‘study’ goes, I tend to discount any group with the word ‘policy’ in its name… sorry.

Has the government forgotten about the three million unemployed workers, and their families, STILL WITHOUT an extension of unemployment benefits since last December? While Billions of tax payers dollars are sent to the Ukraine in an aid package, more and more of these unemployed continue to sink into financial ruin. How can our government send our sons & daughters off to war, but not help their unemployed loved ones back at home? The republican senate has failed these millions of voters, and their families. These Americans have lost all trust and hope and respect for the government because of this lack of compassion, and common decency
