Obama Takes a Stand on Gay Rights

Jay Michaelson at The Daily Beast comments on President Obama’s executive order banning all federal contractors from firing employees on the basis of sexual orientation.

“It may surprise readers to know that, in 29 states, one can be fired simply for being gay—but indeed one can. Federal legislation to make such a termination illegal … has died repeatedly in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. This year’s version, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), is expected to fail as well.”

“So, as Obama did with the minimum wage a few months ago, he has implemented his own private ENDA.”

“While Obama’s order covers more than 10 percent of the American work force, that leaves a whole lot of LGBT workers left over. And in a political climate where rabid right-wingers such as Tony Perkins can torpedo the candidacy of any Republican deemed to have caved to the ‘gay agenda,’ few in the GOP are willing to take the risk. No one wants to be the next Eric Cantor.”

WHAT ABOUT THE UNEMPLOYED’S RIGHTS? THERE ARE STILL THREE MILLION UNEMPLOYED AMERICANS WHO HAVE BEEN WITHOUT AN UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION SINCE LAST DECEMBER. THIS WAS DIRECTLY CAUSED BY THE REPUBLICAN SENATE’S REFUSAL TO PASS THE EMERGENCY UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFIT BILL. THE REPUBLICANS HAVE UTTERLY FAILED THESE UNEMPLOYED FAMILIES, AND DESTINED THEM TO FINANCIAL RUIN AND POVERTY. MANY OF WHOM MAY NEVER RECOVER FROM. THE REPUBLICANS HAVE SHOWN A TOTAL LACK OF COMPASSION AND COMMON DECENCY TOWARDS OUR OWN PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY. THEY ARE SHAMEFUL, AND NEED TO BE VOTED FROM OFFICE.

I think you have the Republicans wrong. They do want to help people. You just can’t keep raising taxes every time someone needs something. The liberals keep acting like cuts cannot be made anywhere. The fact is our government keeps outspending themselves. Yonatan C. you have completely missed the boat.
